I'm so excited I'm about to reach 100 followers! I figured in order to express my thanks to all my readers I would reward you with cool stuff! I thought long and hard about I might offer up as a reward, and I was stuck between The Happy Hooker book and the bad ass pastry gun from Williams n Sonoma. So I think I will let you decide. The winner will get their choice of a $25 gift certificate to Williams n Sonoma or Amazon.com. My budget is is a little measly because I'm blogging for donations only, the more donations I get, the better the prizes will be in the future :)
All you have to do is:
1. Become a Follower if you aren't already
2. Comment on this post and tell me what you plan to make from scratch this year for the first time, or tell me about your favorite tradition that you have learned from your grandma or on your own.
I will put all the names from the comments below in a hat and draw them at the end of this month. Winner will be announced February 28th!
Stay tuned kiddies!
xo
In today's hustle and bustle world convenience seems to be the preferred method of living; but as we are finding out, convenient isn't always good for the body or the soul. Let's do more things the way grandma experienced them: from scratch, from our own soil, with love and pride...but let's not forget to have fun, make fun of ourselves, and the booze. Always remember the booze (if you are of age, of course).
this year i think im gonna give home made ice cream a whirl... it could be hit or miss... but we will see how it goes
ReplyDeleteWell first of all, congrats on almost 100 followers! That's awesome! Maybe one day I'll be near that milestone as well! Haha.
ReplyDeleteSince the chance at a gift card is never a bad thing, I'll play! :) My favorite tradition from my grandma is probably her canned peaches and pears. Either that or her homemade applesauce. Both of which are things I would LOVE to master on my own.
Well, I have many traditions and many recipes that I could share. My first would be a Fuzzy Navel Cake. It is a secret of my late fathers and it is so very yummy! I may try to make cupcakes out fo them after reading your cupcake queen post.
ReplyDeleteI make almost everything from scratch. I am a scrapbooker, so I make cards, books and other paper crafts for people. I have made all of my nieces diaries and notebooks and all my nephews get custom made coloring book/water color holders to organize their paint brushes and crayons.
ReplyDeleteI love handmade things like scarves (I am taking your cue and learning to knit), and I am really getting into cooking and baking.
What did I learn from my grandmother? Well, not really any good recipes or sewing tips, but one thing I did learn from her was patience.
And in baking, and crafting, you need LOTS of that.
I make lots of things. I crochet, paint, sew, make bows, draw, scrapbook...a little of everything. This year I would like to try making more meals from scratch. I love to bake but I'm stuck on the handful of meals I know how to make. But now that I am cooking for three, I really need to drive past the drive thru and park it in the kitchen. Time to dust off all those cook books I bought with the best of intentions!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 100 followers.
ReplyDeleteThis year I have already done a few things 'from scratch' that I have never done before. In relation to food, I made my first cheese cake. This is probably considered pretty easy but I've never been a fan and this one tasted awesome so it'll become my new take everywhere dessert dish.
The other milestone I've had with creating is making my very first card, which is a Valentines card for my husband. I am proud of it but will continue to create new and exciting things throughout the year!
Ooops I forgot the last bit. Unfortunately my grandparents passed away when I was quite young, but I have learnt a few amazing recipes my mum passed down. The main one is her Tuna Mornay. My husband loves it so I took it upon myself to learn and it worked out great. Mum has taught me a lot of cooking tips over the years and I think I do okay as a result.
ReplyDeleteI want to crochet a hat for my dog. (I'm not being sarcastic)
ReplyDeleteIt seems I've been out done by Amber. I also used to have my own hand-made greeting card business. I've never scrapbooked in my life and don't know that I'd be any good at it. I am quite crafty. So I can pretty much create anything as long as I have the deisre.
ReplyDeleteThat was a compliment to Amber by the way!
ReplyDeleteYay for giveaways! I'm already a follower...and I don't really cook lol. But I would looooovvveeee to learn how make a cake from scratch---or learn how to make Gumbo (I'm from new orleans). I think I'm going to stick with the Gumbo from scratch for Thanksgiving this year!

I am loving this blog! and I am already a follower~ thanks by the way for following my blog!!! I plan on making Pierogies for the first time - from scratch- I am currently trying to get 2 of my High School buddies to get me their Bubbies(slovak for Grama?) Recipes!!!
ReplyDeleteI am going to rebuild my life from scratch this year.
ReplyDeleteI was already following you on google reader, but now I'm following you on blogger too! :)
ReplyDeleteI have to conquer my pie crust fear at some point, so perhaps I'll try that from scratch.
Congrats on all your followers!

I follow you publicly on Google Friends Connect (Carolsue). I learned to make (from scratch) several delish Polish recipes from my hubby's Grandma right after we got married. He's very happy when I make these items! (And, Amanda from above, Pierogies, are one of the dishes I was taught!)

Came across some comment of yours and felt compelled to check you out. Glad I did! I make many things from scratch (as you will see on my work blog); we give away lots of stuff, too!
ReplyDeleteBut something I'm just learning to make are quilts. My grandmother was a quilter, but I've never been too swift with a needle and thread.

Hi Candice! I am looking forward to making sprouted wheat bread in the ancient way. I will take wheat berries and sprout them in water. Then grind them up into a paste and bake at very low temp to simulate baking on a rock in the sunshine. I wish I lived somewhere with enough sunshine to keep true to the ancient way, but oh well. :)
ReplyDeleteDamn girl, aren't you the new hottie on the block! Adore you--and check out your fans! Quilts, pie crust, ice-cream & pieogies?? (though personally, I'm gonna have to check out the dog hat chiquita) You inspire the masses and brighten the world babe--congrats!
ReplyDeleteOh, and gramma's frozen peanut butter pie kicks a** on a hot summer day...
I'm planning on sewing a bunch of cute rag dolls from scraps of pretty fabric and giving them away as presents instead of buying useless gifts for my friends. Hopefully they turn out okay!
ReplyDeleteI want to try doing some art for my house like David Bromstad-style. Or I'll attempt to try out my grandma's pie crust recipe and embrace pie-making.
ReplyDeleteI'm making all sweets from scratch this year (which means I eat a whole lot less for lack of convenience!), and using the money I would have spent on impulse sweet buys (I'm a recovering ice creamaholic) I'm sponsoring a woman in the Congo through Women for Women International.
ReplyDeleteI also have the incredibly lofty goal of learning how to crochet, so that maybe by the holidays I can open an etsy store and funnel the proceeds into various charity organizations. You're my crocheting inspiration!
I'm excited.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went back home for the holidays this past December I visited my cousin, who I have always been very simmilar to. We had some champagne and talked about hobbies we wanted to start. We both made the New Years resolution to learn how to knit or crochet, practice and make things all year, and then make each other's Christmas gifts for next year. So I'll be making lots of things for the first time! I think I'll start with scarves. Or socks. Or cat toys.
Congrats on the 100 followers. I love the blog!
ReplyDeleteI have learned how to make pies from scratch, including the pie crust. (Thank you Jewell)
This year I want to continue to learn how to do things my grandmother-in-laws way. She an amazing woman.
I also wish to spend more time with my own grandmother learning her tricks of the trade.

I want to learn how to make biscuits and white gravy. I have only ever made them from the can or pouch. Making them from scratch doesn't seem that hard but I just never remember that I want to try it until it's too late!
ReplyDeleteI plan on learning how to bake bread from scratch, I'm also going to start my own indoor garden, since I live in an apt. Congrats on 100 followers!
ReplyDeleteHi! i'm brand new to blogging, but I found yours and I love the whole concept!
ReplyDeleteI joke that I'm an old lady (but I'm 22 haha) because I love baking, knitting, drinking tea, crafts, cats...
This year I think I might try tackling some sort of canning or pickling. It's always seemed scary, but I love the idea of preserving what's in season. so old fashion.
Ok, so I am entering your give-away! What an awesome idea! I may have to do this with my jewelry sometime when I have time! So I guess I am going to use my homemade noodle recipe (I believe you read that recipe on my e-magazine article). I plan on making a big pot of beef & vegetable soup this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis is so exciting!
ReplyDeleteWhat i've learned was to crochet from my co-worker. One day we just sat at work and saw one of our other friends working and crocheting and we asked her to teach us and she did!
So I crocheted beanies and scarves for my family for Christmas last year! it was so much fun! They all liked them and put them all on and took pictures! It was such a warm feeling for me to see my family appreciate the things I put time and effort into. =]
Congrats on 100 followers!
ReplyDeleteThis summer I want to learn to can. My mom does it every year and makes the best salsa and dilly beans ever! Hopefully she won't mind me getting in her way.
i think im going to try making a poetry journal, maybe even put some of my drawings in it too. it would be neat to look back and see what i used to draw like.
ReplyDeleteI plan to make rye bread from scratch!
